Puss in boots

Sorties

Sunny skies have finally arrived and with them come other cravings, from minty lemonade and straw hats to picnicking under the trees. Those who don’t have the opportunity to run away to the countryside this weekend can have a change of scene in the outskirts of Paris. These days you can take yourself to the Bois de Boulogne park, more precisely to the Pré Catelan restaurant entrance for an ideal family outing. Every weekend from the beginning of May (as well as bank holidays) at 11am, the little Théâtre de la Verdure in the Shakespeare garden welcomes families to an al fresco rendition of Puss In Boots. A one-hour show amongst squirrels running across the stage before an audience of children transfixed by this idyllic setting. When you leave, the little ones leap around with joy and ask you to tell them again in full the story of the Marquess of Carabas while the parents go in search for a tree to lunch by. Picnicking cloths unfold to the rhythm of cackling ducks. But the wood is so big that despite everything, you come to feel alone in the world. As for those who prefer to eat at a table, they can go to the Pré Catelan (be careful, it’s worth making a reservation beforehand and checking if they’re open, that’s without mentioning the staggering lunch price at 95 euros per head) or go round the lake to Chalet des IlesOn the way it’s not unusual to bump into politicians running with their security team, families lost on bikes copiously arguing, “but I told you to take the right-uh !”, and the incredible number of white-jean mini shorts, the dress code of summer 2012. Twenty minutes walk from the Shakespeare Theatre, you can only get to Chalet des Iles by boat on the Porte de la Muette side. More affordable than the Pré Catelan, this restaurant is far from having a perfect cuisine but it does have a fantastic view over the lake. You can lunch while looking at lovers on rented boats and children fishing for crayfish by the water. You feel far away, as if miles from the sweatiness of the Paris metro. And yet…
